Don't let the title fool you into thinking this is the book where Kat finds her love or that it is all hearts and roses. No, this book isn't about that at all. This book is about much more than Kat loving a ghost or anyone for that matter. This book has so much sadness and loneliness in it.

At the start of this book Kat has feelings for Evan but isn't fully aware of how deep they run. Evan is completely oblivious and in denial. Seth is dropping hints to Evan non-stop about it all. Seth's cousin is in town and seems to really like Evan a lot. Evan is slowly pulling away but that only gets worse once they find his ancestral home. Then they have to train separately too. Kat has also been keeping all her training and secrets about the past book activities hidden from her best friend, Morgan because she is afraid of Morgan getting hurt. But in hiding all that she almost loses her best friend because she is betrayed. Toria, Kat's ancestor, and the beloved ghost tells Kat that she will be gone for a while and unreachable. And that is how the book starts out. Kat is losing Evan it seems to some new girl, Morgan is almost done with her, and her favorite ghost and ancestor, Toria who has been helping her tells her goodbye. She feels alone and scared but tries to continue.

Kat and even go back in time two more times this book. They're trying to get the Mallory family amulet. It is the last one that they need to restore the four family's power. They still don't know how the families have connected. How it all started, why the Radcliffe's are their "ruler", why the Kingsley's are always the warrior protector, etc. They do eventually get the Mallory bracelet, but this time it had a cost. This time the cost of a spell Kat had to use almost shattered her mind. Add that on top of all the earlier Kat emotions and we have a girl who really has gone through a lot this book.

The Mallory heir is kind of a shocking reveal. At least to me. Maybe I didn't think on through enough. I don't really know. I think I read these books so fast that it's like I'm along for the ride that the story is offering.

I will say this book ended on a weird cliff hanger. That I didn't like. It just puts a personal interact on the end and it feels out of place. I feel like it should be before the ending big reveal then it would flow better to me. As the book is in its current ARC form, it doesn't feel right. I don't think there is enough emphasis that the book is ending. It feels like it just stops. This in itself could tank the whole feeling of the book if you let it. I chose not to because I feel like this book series has done a lot and come a long way and has plenty more to offer.

Overall, this book brings a lot more to the world and is leading to something special it feels like. They're fighting goblins and other creatures in a forest. There is possibly another family curse that the Mallory heir tells Kat about. There is a lot of side plot reveal with the knowledge of unknown enemies out to destroy the four families. The emotional journey everyone has gone through and is trying to deal with will affect the next book greatly. I think the next book is going to have a lot going on. I hope, and think, the next book in the series will be key. I am looking forward to it for sure. And according to an interview with the author, she envisions there to be five or more books. I'm happy with that. 

I enjoyed reading the third book in the Unbelievables series.

The Black Dagger Legacy really is a thing before this spin-off series came up. You still have people who bring up the original characters in forum posts and book clubs. They are characters that you can't forget. They stick with you. Those characters and the intense storylines are why I keep buying Ward's books. It is a Legacy on its own. I feel like this is important to bring up, now that I am two books deep into the spin-off series. I am seeing how Ward is continuing the world while bringing something new. It seems like each book with being half and half. Half some of the new recruits storyline, and half of the old crew storyline. 

I liked Rhage and Mary. I still do. I believe there is a book of theirs that I have not read yet in the OG series. I think it takes place before this book. So I am missing some stuff. I haven't read the OG series from The King and anything after. So this was a perfect way for me to catch up. I got to see how their relationship has changed, and how they have their new little addition. The complications that happen while they are trying to adopt little Bitty is a good family problems story plot. BTW, Bitty is my cats' name... So anyways. The OG brotherhood has all been together for a while, so having these normal problems showing up in their lives and getting to see them is nice. Butch and Marissa, it was the space that happens between married couples sometimes overtime. Rhage and Mary it is the child and adopting crisis.

I am not sure if I like the split between the two groups. They sort of feel split from each other completely. I don't feel the closeness between the new recruits like you feel from the brothers. I mean they're a "brotherhood" and I don't feel that bond between these recruits at all. I don't know if it is because they haven't developed enough story yet, or if its because so much of the writing is focus on something not related to them at all. Maybe if the book was longer. I don't know. I felt the same way with the last book. This is what sticks me in the 3 stars to 4-star feeling. I go for 4 because the writing is good.

Um so to finally get to the two characters this book is suppose to be about... They are good characters. Elise reminds me of Beth I think from OG. Axe is unique. He is a little goofy at times, and completely dark at times.

I just can't quit J. R. Ward. No matter how a book may leave me sometimes wishing I could, I just can't. I always hope for better in the next one. Better character connections, better display of emotions, or better story advancement. Something like that. With Blood Kiss, I am actually looking forward to reading more about the new recruits. Now, I'm not knocked out of the park like I was with Consumed by Ward. But I am interested in continuing. For example, with the main Black Dagger Brotherhood series, I am stuck on The King, and can't finish it. I don't even remember the two books prior to it really either. I have just lost interest in the events of the story, but not the characters. So it's nice reading new "events" with the who recruitment process and still seeing some OG BDB.

I was stuck between a 3 and a 4-star rating for this. I think it has to do with my unpopular opinion, to be honest. Craeg is a good male character for this story. I feel like at the end of the book his character could really have been a little more conflicted. I feel like there could have been a little more emotional build-up to the HAE end there. It wasn't bad. If it was supposed to snap into HAE like it did because of the saving the day moment, then I feel like not the emotions then more internal talking about how it snapped into place. 

Paradise is the Marissa I wanted. Although, we don't want a giant world full of similar type casts for EVERY book in a huge series right. So I respect Marissa for who is she as a person and how she fits into the world. Paradise is just more interesting to me. She is a young woman in the Glymera world who is supposed to be this pretty trophy with a good pedigree. But she wants to push herself to more. It turns out she is blindly capable of the recruit program. She makes it in and is the top of the class and it barely seems like it registers to her. Until later, there is an internal monologue that she intends to be true to the program. I wish there was a little more to read from Paradise and Craeg for sure.

Unpopular Opinion: I have never been a fan of Marissa and Butch. I was just never super into them. I feel like this book made me tolerate them more. And I also appreciate that it was like a character redo. Like Paradise is the new Marissa. Same for Craeg. Half of this book is about Butch and Marissa. So it took to be from near the end of November to read this book, till about the end of January. That is so many months, but again, I just can't quit Ward. I just have never been a fan of them. If it was a book just about them I would have rated it lower. They go through some mundane emotional struggles that are kinda of redeeming to read. A developed relationship with some problems. But I am just not a fan of them. Sorry.

Overall, I feel like this is a decent start for a spin-off from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I liked the new characters introduced. I liked the conflict that does happen within the story, and that it isn't just more Lessening Society.

I read this book in half of a day. It was the easiest read of them all. The finale to the series tackles the end of high school for LJ and Peter. Every relationship in senior year struggles with if they should stay together while they go away to college. LJ and Peter are no different. LJ has changed so much from the start, much like any girl in a long-term relationship. Your whole world revolves around each other. So when LJ doesn't get into the same college as Peter, shit starts to go downhill fast. Thankfully we are over Gen after two books, but Peter is still an emotional child I feel like. He really didn't change at all as a book character, but I am not completely upset about that. I say that because LJ even comments about it herself about him not growing up. He really acts like some boys would act in all the situations of the books. So I am not upset, I just don't like how the book wraps up with the last 10 pages or whatever it was. Put it this way, you will be on your seat till the end waiting to see what their decision is.

You also see how LJ's father getting remarried affects their family. How Kitty feels, which you could probably guess if you read the previous book. Really it is about Margot's reaction, and how the three sisters interact. To be honest, you can see how the conflict there would start. Margot didn't seem impressed with Ms. Rothschild in the least. So her being so far away and the other sisters getting to know Trina, there is bound to be conflict. Kitty is a very vocal person, and with her love for Trina, there was going to be some issues.

The sisters' relationship in this book doesn't have a big focus like the previous books. But I want to tip my hat to the writing for this. Yes, this is a romance, but in a way, these are also sister books. Book One, Lara Jean's connection to Margot and the stresses she has trying to not destroy her relationship with her. Book Two, her and Kitty seem to form a new bond and are closer than the first book. Kitty is invested in LJ and Peter. Book Three, Lara Jean is so stressed with a college that she isn't thinking about everyone before herself. She is trying to not think about her college worries, by baking away every day. So yes, the sister's aspect falls off a little, but I am not upset because this is Lara Jean's story. It is about her this time.

Dark Alpha's Hunger is another super short novel by Donna Grant that you can easily eat up in a day. I feel like the story here is better than my last read. This had angst, desire, passion, a quirky female main and it added a bunch of new characters to the ever growing world. I foresee more Reaper novels in the future for sure. This novel doesn't talk much about the current events in previous books, but it all fairness Eoghan has been in some terrible dark dimension. So if you were writing true to the characters feelings, yea he isn't going to be filling you in on the current state of the fight with Bran. So this book really deviates from where it felt like the story arc was going. I enjoyed this book because it was short and well written. I think that the events from this book will impact other story arcs within the world. It would be easy to do. I don't want to reveal anything, but I feel like there are a couple characters that when their books hit, fans are gonna go apeshit.

Moving on. So from what few books I have read, it seems like fae halflings have a specific power that makes them unique and one of a kind. Thea has a gift with music. She was abandoned at an orphanage as a baby and grew there her whole life. She hasn't thought about who her parents might be in a long time. So when she plays music, it just comes to her naturally, straight from her soul. She also was drawn to locations. There were childhood stones that drew her to them, and she still went to them as an adult. You know those stones in Outlander that the chick goes back in time from, yea those. So as an adult, she goes back to some stones in this one location and starts playing her violin. The music feels like its being pulled from her by the stones. Then she sees a hand reaching from her out of the dark entrance to the stones. This hand becomes a body as she helps pull him out, and reveals Eoghan. He heard her enchanting music and followed it out of that nightmare realm he was stuck in.

I feel like this book deserves its higher rating. I really liked this novel, it really pulls me into the world while it is expanding. I love falling in love, which I've said before. I think if I hadn't received a free ARC, I would buy it. I am really looking forward to whenever Cael gets his book. And Rhi, I want Rhi to have a book.

I’m always nervous about starting a book series that is a spin-off without reading the original that it came from. Thankfully, this never seemed like a spin-off because all the information to understand the story is there for you to read. That made this an easy beginning to a new world for me. Which is funny because my notes from reading the book completely contradict how I started this post. I know how that sounds, but bear with me, the confusion there seems like that is completely authors intention here. 

See Amara is like a Russian crime lords daughter. At the start of the book, someone breaks her body while she was being held captive. Then as she is weak, she gets rescued. So my first thought while I was reading and as she is seeing people she knows are rescuing her. On top of that, she is already completely in love with one, Riordan. During the rescue, she knows it is a trap that is meant to kill Riordan. So as they are escaping, she trying to warn him of the trap and he gets shot carrying her. As they are making their escape on the helicopter, Amara hears that Riordan is dying from one of the men helping with the rescue. He dies but comes back a time or two. Amara wakes up completely forgetting him and a bunch of stuff from the past year. So you get to read the journey while she rediscovers her love for him. Amara forgets a lot, from meeting him on to waking up in the hospital was completely gone. She couldn’t remember any of it. There is only one thing that she remembers and it is an intense loss. She lost someone that day.

Flash over to Riordan because he isn’t just a hunk of meat to throw at the reader to enjoy super hot romps. I mean he is in a way but... Anyway; he is a good a good Irish boy that has a family attribute that is magical. It’s not actual magic but it might as well be labeled that way. Basically, Malone men if they have the soulful Irish eyes and when they fall in love with their one soulmate, they have this intense bond with them. It reminds me of a bond you find in some vampire romances. Where they instinctively know how the other is feeling or thinking. Oh, they also connect to each other through dreams and nightmares too. It’s called “finding their way” which I like. I like that it has its own family legacy to it.

Having that soulful connection and her memory loss was a strong way to explain that soul connection that they share. There are few surprises that I feel were predictable and then some I didn’t expect. I didn’t see it going that way. The whole journey through the book was good as she rediscovered her memories and her love and loss. I really like the book and how well the whole story was written out. 

Now I have heard Lora Leigh over the years and I know that she has tons of books but I have never read one. If I have it was so long ago that I completely forgot the story. Although I really don’t think I have. So my opinion is this is a pretty good book with a little mystery and “magic”. I’m calling it magic.

Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones 4 ✭

Wintersong leaves you feeling open. Your base emotions felt. You have a bewitching enchantment. S. Jae-Jones wrote some really cool scenes that feel spooky but completely captivating. This is for a person who appreciates someone having an actual style to their writing. 

This haunting romantic tale reminds me of older horror novels. The ones that lead you on a trail into their enigmatic world. I guess it starts with the world building right. There are key scenes in the book that are unforgettable. For example when Liesl can’t find her sister in the market, or when she finds her sister eating a forbidden fruit in the goblin grove. You could almost feel the juices from the fruit yourself just reading about it. There are so many little pieces that make it the story such a good read. The confusion Liesl feels, and the reader’s anxiety knowing what she has forgotten. Their grandmother’s constant reminder of the tales of the Goblin King.

The characters are set in a different time than us. It is distant but not so distant that it isn’t relatable in Germany. Which that caught me off guard. I wasn’t expecting that, but I found it appealing. They have a drunk for a father and a nagging mother. There are three siblings in total. The older daughter is the prized beauty to be sold off into an arranged marriage. The younger, Liesl, is to watch after her old sister and sort of end up the old maid. There is a brother who relies heavily on Liesl’s support to maintain his confidence.

Overall I couldn’t be happier with reading this novel. It was thrilling for me. I always love a bit of romance to my stories. I really liked that this wasn’t as cookie cutter as I was expecting when I initially read the blurb. I am very thankful to have received an ARC copy to enjoy.

Thank you Gallery Books for giving me this ARC copy of consumed. Reading Consumed was like coming home. When you read a book, and you easily enjoy the complexity of each individual character instantly for however brief the introduction you get to them, you know that it is going to be a good series. To me, it felt like meeting a new set of characters with that same quality of the OG Black Dagger Brotherhood characters.  I say OG BDB because I haven't read the last few books and I lost a little interest in them. I want to continue but it isn't high on the list. This makes me not a superfan but a fan. So when I say I have that original feeling of expectation to a great new series, I mean it.

There are a ton of good characters that get some screen time here. It isn't just a story about Anne and Danny, although their story is amazing, you don't have to focus on them. This is a whole crew of people who all have their own life problems. So seeing everyone in this world interact through the rest of the series as it comes out should be really good. They're all relatable in their own ways, and if you can't relate, you understand the character type in general.

One of the things that I really liked was reading J.R. Ward's acknowledgments section in her new book. She wrote about how she worked with police and fire while there were working. It sounds like they gave her some job shadowing time to help her learn more about the careers behind her characters. They answered her questions and got to see their selfless heroism, her words not mine, in action. I think that truly helped her story feel even more real. You get the feeling of pride in what they do, but also that they're regular guys/gals who are just doing their job.

I really recommend Consumed. It is a great beginning to a series. It isn't drawn out building a world or characters, they develop as you go. The cliffhanger is just enough that you want to continue the plot without having to stress out about it until whenever the next one is. I personally appreciate this. I hate when books leave you with more questions than answers. Thankfully this doesn't do that.

I'm still packing and preparing for the move. So here's another audiobook review.

Marissa Meyer has really written a fantastic retelling of a childhood classic. I like it because it isn't like the usual retellings that really don't feel like a retelling. This actually does retell the story a different way, in its own way, that's a little dark and still sweet. Cinder had some good humor written into it as well that makes it feel alive and not just a story on a page. The narrator was good in this one. Although I did doze off in a couple chapters that were really descriptive. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, I  just have to wait until its available for me to borrow from my local library. 

Cinder herself is fun for me to read. She has a smart ass side to her and could tell it like it is which is fun to read. But she also has a sweet caring side to her. Her family is mostly set up like the typical Cinderella story except she does have one sister who isn't completely horrible to her. Cinder doesn't have forest friends, or dwarves, or enchanted furniture as friends. Nope, she has an android for a friend who has this bizarre personality chip that makes it seem like she is a boy-crazy teenage girl. Her stepmother is really awful to her, but other than that you don't know anything else about her.

The events through the book keep changing Cinder's perspective of herself over and over. She starts the book out as a cyborg, half robot half human creation, to being something completely else. Cyborgs are something no people like at all. And when I say no people I mean the human's on earth and the Lunars on planet Luna, which is like the moon. Lunars are different because their time on the moon has changed the people there that now they have powers. Powers like mind control. They can manipulate the way that people think or what they think about doing. The people on Earth are not big fans of Lunars, to say the least. We value our freedom, and on planet Luna there is none.

There are a lot of events that may possibly happen in the future that makes me want to continue the series. A prison break, maybe a war, maybe overthrowing a queen, maybe more love?

Yes, it has been a little bit since a post and I am so sorry for that. It has been busy with kids birthdays, and best friends visiting from out of state. It's going to keep being busy because we finally have a house. We are in the final stages of buying our first house. So I decided that I am going to try and borrow a few audiobooks to listen and pack. So far I have finished one book and I'm like a third into another. We get the keys to our house on July 25th, so since today is the 15th, I have less than 10 days to be done packing so we can load up a truck. I really wish I could dig into a few more ARC's I have waiting but I'm going to have to wait. 

To the Review!

I want to start off by informing you that I am totally a Jeaniene Frost fangirl. I really do enjoy her books a lot and I can't put my finger on the exact reason why I just overall love her writing and her characters. The narrator for this audiobook did an amazing job. She was able to put the feelings into her voice so good that it blew me away. It has been a while since I have listened to an audiobook too so maybe I didn't pay attention to those things before. I don't know.

This is the finale to the Night Prince series in the Night Huntress World. These books featured Vlad and Leila and their romance. Over the four total books, you get to see Leila transform into a strong badass woman. I suspect Leila and Cat (The OG Jeaniene Frost badass chick) will be best friends in no time. Vlad has also changed a little but really he is always angry and ready to kill anyone in an instant. This definitely doesn't change in this book as they search for a way to remove the spell that is linking Leila's life to Vlad's nephew. Mircea has also been trying to kill Leila and is Vlad's enemy. With Vlad's tendency to kill first ask later, this has forced Vlad to have a little patience. 

This really does finish off the series good. I feel like it is a good ending and a good HEA. You see just how far Vlad is willing to go to save his wife. It also completely sets you up for Ian's book coming this fall. So I would read this for sure just so that you can see the events that lead into Ian's book properly. Will I be getting Ian's book? Yes, I already pre-ordered it because I have wanted Ian to have his own book forever. Fangirl...

I received a free E-galley of Heat from St. Martin's Paperback to review and I am very thankful for the opportunity to read Donna Grant's book. I have not read any of the previous books in the series. It is totally something that I would be interested in reading, and I am definitely adding them to my "need to pick up" list. I will say that this book is very busy and I wouldn't recommend picking it up alone. You can read it as a stand-alone, I did, but you miss a lot of the family connections that you are supposed to be feeling amongst everyone. This is totally a series that you could easily eat up. It reminds me of Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series, except with dragon kings, druids, and the fae.

Without reading the previous books you miss all the intricacies in the relationships. You get a few references to previous events and a few other characters pop up here and there, but you don't feel any connection to them. If you had read the 11 books prior it would totally be different. You would know what Nikolai was like before the book, where it feels like when you start they're already in love with each other. Stuff like that. It isn't bad at all though. This is a great way to get yourself connected to the world and then continue from here on out. I think you would be able to get a good feel for the rest of the stories progression and want to continue.

Esther is a fun character in this book. She is haunted by the fact she doesn't remember events in her life since her memory has been erased. That's where you pick up, so you have to piece what's been going on from there. You make this discovery that she is a part of this magical world with Dragon shifters and the fae in more ways than one. Once her issues are resolved the book really comes together in a sweet way. I feel like Esther and Nikolai's connection was a fun and sweet one. After that, I was invested in Esther's character. I liked who she was after everything she has gone through, and I didn't even know half of what she went through because it was written earlier in the series. That just makes me more interested in the series.

I went with a 4-star rating because I think whether you have or haven't read the earlier books the characters are interesting and all the different side plots are interesting enough that it felt worthy of a four star.

Adeline by Christina Mcknight was a sweet story but one I have read before, sort of. The story isn't bad, it just introduces you to a snobby young lady who is full of attitude right before she goes to an etiquette school. Then it cut scenes to her as an adult and who has grown-up mature. I just feel like it almost wasn't even worth reading the first part. Now, this is part of a series. So maybe the introduction ties with the previous books of the series, I don't know I have never read them. I guess that kind of threw me off for the first half of the book.

This is another retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Books like that are a classic for a reason. So when you read them you have to find what makes that one special. I think part of what makes this so special is how Jasper is. He is almost like a scared little boy who grew to be a man. So everyone around him cares for him, and he equally tries to take care of them. It's really nice. He is horribly scarred from a fire that took his family away from him. You can genuinely feel the love that he has.

As the story continues I did start to like Adeline more as a character. She had been discarded by her family. So both characters are lonely and need a someone of their own. For me, it was Adeline's character that sort of lost it for me. Online I see tons of people do love her character, so maybe I wasn't feeling it personally. I would recommend this book so some of my friends, but only if it was something I think they would be into. It doesn't feel like one of those books to me that you have to tell EVERYONE you know.

I am very glad that I decided to continue the Red Queen series. The first book I felt was a little predictable, but it was also the intro to the characters and the world so I wanted to continue. 

When you start Glass Sword you have Mare and Cal being viewed by the country as an evil lying temptress and a murdering prince who killed his own father. All of this is done by the machinations of the Queen, Elara, who has used her whisper abilities to read everyone's minds and control others to her will. She had been hiding some of Mare's antics with the Red Guard to her own benefit to kill the king and exile the firstborn son. Elara is a mental master, and her son Maven is not just her puppet, but her willing accomplice. 

Mare has gone through so much change since the initial moments of Red Queen, it really is like she is stuck between who she was, is, and will be when necessary. The first book she was a thief who had no other skills, that her own family was completely disappointed with. Then they made her into the fake princess, who had to be cold-hearted around everyone. Then they go and kill anyone associated with her so that makes her lockdown. She needs to protect people but she isn't capable enough to do it alone. In Glass Sword that is one of her biggest conflicts with herself. She wants to care and worry about everyone, but she knows from the previous experiences that if she does she will be crushed and broken. So she makes herself emotionally distant from everyone around her. Her personal struggle is very important. You see her at her weakest, her strongest, and how far she is willing to go. 

Another thing is seeing the characters around her and how their opinions of her change. They praise her and raise her to a pedestal, only to then completely turn around and abhor what she has become. And for different side characters, it isn't even in the order. That makes you wonder who knows more than she does, who has also changed during this book, and who is true to Mare or not. I will be honest, I'm still not sure how the next book is going to turn out. Which is a nice change from the predictability of the first book. 

I am currently reading Cruel Crown which is two novellas that you can read additional. I've only started and I think that it is worth it. I got it for $5 and was happy about that. I'm looking to get King's Cage soon I hope. I'm sort of hooked on the cliffhanger of Glass sword at the moment.
